Nearly half of renters in Cedar Rapids pay more than 30% of their income on rent. Without the safety and stability of an affordable home, families are forced to choose between shelter and basic necessities such as food, education or medical care. Now, more than ever, these choices will affect our whole country.

The sudden lifestyle changes that have affected our whole population this year– things like financial insecurity, scarcity of supplies, education disruption and medical issues– are things that countless families have to deal with every day of their lives because of the lack of access to safe, decent, affordable housing. In order to make sure the rent can be paid, millions are forced to ignore advice to shelter in place in order to keep what shelter they have.

To address this critical need locally and across the country, Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity is joining Home is the Key, a national campaign by Habitat for Humanity International that spotlights the need for affordable housing and aims to raise funds to drive lasting change in the United States. From April 6-16, HFHI will be sharing facts, statistics and stories on their website and Facebook relating to the need for affordable housing. To help make a difference and show the world that Home is the Key, consider donating, volunteering or attending our events. For information on our affordable homeownership program, click here.
