What if the home you had always dreamed of was hurting your children? One future Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity homeowner struggled with that dilemma.

Tonya and her three children Sophia, Isabella, and Elijah have experienced many difficult living situations. The Iowa Flood of 2008 pushed them out of the first home they attempted to buy on contract. The next house the family lived in contained unsafe levels of lead, which has resulted in long term health issues for Elijah.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and PRevention has identified housing as a key social determinant of health. They’ve proved that people who can afford a home experience better health throughout their lives than people who can’t.

Due to the health effects of substandard housing, Tonya is forced to spend extra time and money to help Elijah grow up healthy. He’s only five years old and he spends three days a week in speech therapy, physical therapy, and occupational therapy. Budgeting for these additional expenses impedes Tonya’s ability to save for a mortgage.

You can make sure children like Elijah have a safe and healthy place to grow up. You can prevent families like Tonya’s from having to move repeatedly, and work with them to build strength, stability, and self-reliance through affordable homeownership. Your donation today will change their lives.

“I’m looking forward to finally establishing a foundation,” says Tonya. “We’ve had to move a lot. I want my kids to be able to say, “This is my home. We’re going home.”

P.S. We urgently need your help to meet our goal of securing 250 donations by December 31. Your gift in any amount is powerful and appreciated. Thank you!
